The University

The Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU) was formally established under Law 4610/2019, titled “Synergies of Universities and Technological Educational Institutes, Access to Higher Education, Experimental Schools, State General Archives, and Other Provisions” (Articles 23–34). However, the institution’s contributions to higher education can be traced back significantly further, primarily through the legacy of the Technological Educational Institute (TEI) of Crete.

Headquartered in Heraklion, Crete, HMU operates academic facilities across five urban centers: Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno, Agios Nikolaos and Sitia. The university’s academic structure encompasses five schools and eleven undergraduate departments, alongside sixteen postgraduate programs—three of which are conducted in collaboration with other institutions. Furthermore, HMU supports a substantial body of doctoral research across various scientific domains.

The mission of the Hellenic Mediterranean University is anchored in several foundational principles. As a public university, it aims to provide high-quality education to students at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It is committed to systematic and high-caliber research, along with the advancement of doctoral studies. The university actively fosters continuous engagement with society, stakeholders, and the productive sectors of the country. Moreover, it is dedicated to promoting the core principles of democracy, equality, progress, social cohesion, solidarity, and justice within the educational community and the broader society.
